Intro to 2d Animation (Discussion #3)

  1. Timing
From the animated video/cartoon Thundercats, the principle timing was revealed at (0:46s   - 0:50s) when the thundercat character jumped on a ledge and advanced towards his opponents.

I believe I identified the correct principle, as within the realm of animation, timing represents the actual speed of a particular action by adjusting the variation of space/time of frames between the different  frames.

2. Exaggeration:
In the animated production Cowboy Goofy in lawless western Town”, the principle Exaggeration was observed at (1:18s) when goofy was travelling too fast on the open road which prompted him to make a sudden halt in an exaggerated manner in a bid to avoid colliding with the vehicle that was in front of his.

I believe I identified the correct principle being that “Exaggeration” in animation speaks to making a scene/frame appear more extreme a surreal, and the scene mentioned conveyed just that.

3 Arcs:
Based on my observation of the animated production “Samurai X”, the Arc principle was identified at (1:30s) when Kenshin in an arced motion struck his foe with a blow that rendered him helpless for a few minutes.

The Arc principle deals with animating an image or character that moves in a slightly circular path/motion and that was quite evident in the animation and at the time mentioned.

4. Secondary Action
Based on research conducted, I noticed the principle “Secondary Action” occurred at (5:45s) in the animated production titled “Avengers Infinity War” when hulk exudes the primary action where he doubled his fists out of anger and came in with the secondary action by smacking the ground in great rage before advancing toward his opponents.

I believe I have identified the correct principle seeing that secondary action is about adding more dimension to the primary character animation thereby supplementing and reinforcing the main action and all that was conveyed in the production at the time specified above.

5. Solid Drawing
From the prominent animated production Shrek, the principle “Solid Drawing” was identified at (1:10s - 113s) when the cat made somewhat of a realistic jump in the air to catch the fairy’s wand there after landing on the donkey’s back. Solid Drawing is defined by Frank Thomas and Olie Johnston as being able to draw a character from every single angle fro the character to appear as though they're real/alive.

Therefore, I beleive I've identified the correct principle due to fact that the I observed the cat acting in a human like manner to catch the wand and thats what solid drawing speaks to.

6. Appeal
The animated production “Aladdin raiders of the lost shark” uses the principle Appeal   at (1:34s - 1:40s) when the genie tried to sway Aladdin with donuts.

It is evident that viewers can make out the blue character to be that of a genie, as well as viewers can make out that the genie possess some level of charm and charisma which is essentially what the principle of animation Appeal speaks to. Hence, why I believe I have identified the correct principle.
