Intro to 2D Animation (Discussion #4)

The animated production/motion picture ADUMU employed several principles of animation. Below is a condensation of the principles that were observed.

  1. Squash and stretch

The squash and stretch principle was observed at (0:22s - 0:27s) when one of the individuals travelling on the motorcycle fell and bounced in somewhat of a realistic manner just like a normal human being would.  After observing the mentioned principle I certainly believe it was appropriately executed. This is attributed to the fact that squash and stretch represents giving the weight and volume to a character as it  move.

2. Slow in Slow out

One other key principle  that was observed was Slow-In and Slow-out. This principle occurred at (0:43s) when the frames eased in (slow-in) to place some amount of life like  emphasis and attention on the lion who seemed threatened by the individual and after which the frames eased out(slow-out). No doubt that the Slow-in and Slow-out principle was appropriately executed. This is because more frames/drawings were used to make the actions of the lion slower.

3. Staging

Staging was observed throughout the entire production. This is in consonance with the fact that different frames displayed poses and actions which communicates to the audience/viewer a distinct mood, reaction, and idea as it relates to what the story is about and what to expect. Staging was appropriately manipulated as specific actions and moods exude by the different characters provides the audience/viewer with the opportunity to tell what is coming next and what the production is about.

4. Anticipation

The principle Anticipation was identified at (1:48s) after the character with the gun violently pushed the character with the spear the ground. By this time the lion starred in aw and prepared himself to attack the gunman. So with all that being observed by the audience, they can tell what action is going to be performed by the different characters. Hence the principle was used in  the the manner it should be used.

5. Secondary Action

This particular principle was identified at (2:10s) when the character with the spear in a primary action angrily ran toward the spear, and that primary action was reinforced with a secondary action when the character forcefully threw the spear in the direction of the lion  in a bid to slew him with it. I believe the correct principle was utilized being that ,secondary action speaks to supplementing actions or movements that add to and reinforce the main/primary character animation to cast more dimension and depth.

6. Appeal

The next principle that I identified was solid drawing. This principle was observed many times in the production. The drawing of the character with the spear was quite distinct. This is attributed to the fact that the audience can identify with the character as it relates to the characters gender, built, ethnicity and to some extent cultural background. Appeal was appropriately executed being that the audience can identify with the pleasant, simple, communicable and strong design of the characters featured in the production.

7. Timing
Another principle discovered was timing. This principle was played out at (2:05s) when the gunman resorted to firing shots at the lion who was chasing him down. Timing was used to change the illustration/ poses of the frames to facilitate the illusion that the lion is running faster than the shots being fired at him. I believe this principle was effectively outlined in the production.

8. Follow through and Overlapping action
Follow through is the next principle that I detected. This principle comes in at (2:01s) when the gunman while running for his life from the attacking lion tried to slow down by making  sudden stop while his feet could be seen skating in the dirt in an effort to break his run. It is clearly outlined therefore my reason for believing the principle was executed in the correct manner.

9. Straight ahead and pose to pose animation

This principle was used right throughout the entire animation. This is conjunction with the fact that some level of spontaneity and zaniness were observed which are  mostly used to depict to the viewer/audience a production that entails wild and scrambling actions. I do  believe this principle was efficiently executed being that the spontaneity and zaniness are associated with straight ahead pose to pose animation.

10. Solid drawing
The solid drawing principle was recognized throughout the production. This is quite evident  as all the characters as well as the background images had balance in their volume and weight so as to give the characters a and background a more realistic lifelike appearance. In animation, solid drawing basically deals with being able to develop a character/animatied production from angles in a believable way for the character to appear life like. Hence I beleive the principle was appropriately used.

11. Arcs

This particular principle was observed at (0:21s) when the motocycle performed a up and over like motion. I beleive this principle was correctly utilized as arcs in animation speaks to giving the animated character a natural action and realistic flow as was seen at the time mentioned.

12. Exaggeration

Another principle that was identifies is exaggeration. At (0:36s - 0:57s) the character who fell from the motorcycle could clearly be seen displaying a few facila expressions, attitudes, and poses associated with fright/fear. I'm positively sure that exaggeration was used in the correct capacity, as exaggeration in animation speaks to animations which exude facial features, expressions, attitudes and actions.

Intro to 2d Animation (Discussion #3)

  1. Timing
From the animated video/cartoon Thundercats, the principle timing was revealed at (0:46s   - 0:50s) when the thundercat character jumped on a ledge and advanced towards his opponents.

I believe I identified the correct principle, as within the realm of animation, timing represents the actual speed of a particular action by adjusting the variation of space/time of frames between the different  frames.

2. Exaggeration:
In the animated production Cowboy Goofy in lawless western Town”, the principle Exaggeration was observed at (1:18s) when goofy was travelling too fast on the open road which prompted him to make a sudden halt in an exaggerated manner in a bid to avoid colliding with the vehicle that was in front of his.

I believe I identified the correct principle being that “Exaggeration” in animation speaks to making a scene/frame appear more extreme a surreal, and the scene mentioned conveyed just that.

3 Arcs:
Based on my observation of the animated production “Samurai X”, the Arc principle was identified at (1:30s) when Kenshin in an arced motion struck his foe with a blow that rendered him helpless for a few minutes.

The Arc principle deals with animating an image or character that moves in a slightly circular path/motion and that was quite evident in the animation and at the time mentioned.

4. Secondary Action
Based on research conducted, I noticed the principle “Secondary Action” occurred at (5:45s) in the animated production titled “Avengers Infinity War” when hulk exudes the primary action where he doubled his fists out of anger and came in with the secondary action by smacking the ground in great rage before advancing toward his opponents.

I believe I have identified the correct principle seeing that secondary action is about adding more dimension to the primary character animation thereby supplementing and reinforcing the main action and all that was conveyed in the production at the time specified above.

5. Solid Drawing
From the prominent animated production Shrek, the principle “Solid Drawing” was identified at (1:10s - 113s) when the cat made somewhat of a realistic jump in the air to catch the fairy’s wand there after landing on the donkey’s back. Solid Drawing is defined by Frank Thomas and Olie Johnston as being able to draw a character from every single angle fro the character to appear as though they're real/alive.

Therefore, I beleive I've identified the correct principle due to fact that the I observed the cat acting in a human like manner to catch the wand and thats what solid drawing speaks to.

6. Appeal
The animated production “Aladdin raiders of the lost shark” uses the principle Appeal   at (1:34s - 1:40s) when the genie tried to sway Aladdin with donuts.

It is evident that viewers can make out the blue character to be that of a genie, as well as viewers can make out that the genie possess some level of charm and charisma which is essentially what the principle of animation Appeal speaks to. Hence, why I believe I have identified the correct principle.

Discussion #4

After watching this video, I identified several principle of animation that were executed appropriately.  These are as follows: Arc, I believe arc was executed appropriately, as it brings out a more expressive look in the character movement, which incorporate flexibility of the character.  Appeal was also appropriately executed, it could be seen in the facial and body posture of the character, which gives a more realistic look. I also identified Anticipation which prepared me mentally for the action that the character was going to display, so I think anticipation was executed appropriately.  Staging was also executed appropriately as I was able to see the action that each character was performing clearly.  Exaggeration was also executed appropriately as it create a more interesting scene and also incorporate anticipation,  these principles of animation are what makes the video interesting and fun.  Follow Through and Overlapping also executed well and was relevant in the scene as it brings the action to life making the actions of the characters looking real.  There are some other principles that could would’ve made the video more interesting, that I never identified.

Animation Critique- Discussion 4

In this video various Principle of Animation  where shown through out. I would say some of the principle were executed properly because it was demonstrated properly has discussed. The first being Squash and Stretch was seen between 0.22 to 0.27.....it was shown when the girl open and close up eyes and then opened it wider when she saw the carnival video. Anticipation can be seen when the audience would have been anticipated to see her performing in the carnival. Alot of Staging was present throughout espicesally when she was dancing. Follow Through and Overlapping Action can be seen with her dancing and wining her lower body. Secondary Action can be seen when she is dancing her lower body and moving her hands left and right. She gave an Appeal to the audience with the movements of her dancing and the fact that she was never involved in carnival dancing. I think Timing and Exaggeration should have been there and will also be appropriate.

Principle Of Animation Set 1- Animation Production Video Discussion 2

CGI 3D Animated Short Film: "The Nubes - Round One " - by Blaze Productions
I would say Squash and Stretch happened at 1:48 because it involved jumping and strechting of the character.
Anticipation Occurred at 1:04 and 2:07 to 2:14... Where the bug was suddenly squashed. It was shown again between 2:07 and 2:14 when the character was slowly kicking towards the next character.
Staging Occurred at 1:11 and 1:22.. I would say because both characters where having a conversation and the camera went around them at different angles.
Follow Through i would say occurred at 2:27 to 2:34 where the characters were overlapping and fighting each other.
Slow in and Slow out at 0:12... I would say this is the right principle because has to do with cross motions

Flipbook Module 1 Discussion 1- Original Story

Persistence of Vision is basically the optical illusion in which multiple images blend into a single image in the human mind and contributes to the motion and perception in cinemas. It applies to my flip book because some audience interpret motion at rates as low as ten frames. The brain will take about couple seconds to process an image. Frame per seconds is important because its there to determine how fast the mind can process and see flashing images at a given time.
